Elizabethan Collars

Preventing self-injury is an important part of home care for sick pets. Animals may harm themselves or irritate their injuries by rubbing, scratching, or chewing their diseased skin, wounds, or surgery sites.

The Elizabethan collar is a type of plastic collar that is effective in preventing pets from injuring themselves until healing is complete. The collar should fit so that your pet's nose is just covered by the plastic. With the collar in place, pets can eat, drink, and sleep, but they cannot reach their bodies with their mouths. Most pets adapt to the collar very well. Some pets object to the collar at first, but if you allow them time to get used to it, they usually accept them.

It is important to keep your pet's collar on at all times until your re-check appointment. Keep the collar clean by wiping it with a wet cloth while it remains on your pet. It can also be taken off for cleaning if this is easier.

Elizabethan collars are supplied by your veterinarian.
