Cartrophen Vet (Pentosan Polysulphate)
Does your dog have trouble getting up from a lying or sitting position ?
Does (s)he become stiff after exercise ?
Does (s)he have a tough time when it comes to the stairs ?
Does (s)he walk with a limp ?
Has your dog recently had surgery on any their bones or joints ?
Yes ?
Then you might consider a course of Cartrophen Vet for your pet.
Cartrophen Vet has a proven mechanism of action (unlike many over-the-counter nutraceuticals such as "Arthri-Care"), and proven effects on lameness and pain. It has been proven to benefit dogs suffering from age-related osteoarthritis and trauma-induced arthritis. Cartrophen Vet is not only anti-inflammatory, it actually heals cartilage and synovium (the capsule which surrounds a joint). Other proven benefits include improved circulation, and the inhibition of cartilage damaging enzymes. So, rather than acting as "bandaid" to arthritis Cartrophen actually promotes joint health. It is for this reason that we recommend a course for dogs who have undergone surgical procedures on bones or joints.
Joint surgery (such as cruciate ligament repair or "knee reconstruction") involves opening the joint caspule, examining the cartilage within the joint and possibly removing a portion of it. The aim of a course of cartrophen post-surgery is to halt joint damage caused by the initial injury or defect, and that which may be caused as a result of the procedure.
Cartrophen Vet is available in injection or capsule form. A course of injections is the most common form chosen by owners. This involves four injections given over a period of 4 weeks (so one injection every 5-7 days). We then recommend a "booster" shot every 6-8 weeks to maintain the benefits of the initial course. For a 30kg dog the cost of a course of Cartrophen is between $75-80 (excl consultation fee). Payment can be made 'up front' or after each individual injection.
Many owners choose to combine a Cartrophen regimen with over-the-counter preparations such as Sasha's Blend. Anecdotal reports suggest that arthritic dogs can truly benefit from this combination. For severe arthritis cases or acute flare-ups the vet may prescribe some oral anti-inflammatory medication to help relieve the pain.
